How the links work
Some links in The File are affiliate links. If you buy something through one, this site earns a commission from the retailer. The price you pay is the same either way.
The rules we hold ourselves to
- No paid placements. No brand can buy a slot in an issue, and none of them see an issue before it's published.
- Commission never decides a pick. Plenty of the right answers pay nothing, and some issues will recommend spending less — or nothing at all.
- Rejections are published. Every issue lists what lost and why, including products that would have paid well.
- Affiliate links are marked. They carry
rel="nofollow sponsored", and each issue repeats this disclosure where the links appear. - The tools are unaffected. The bookmark tools and guides have no commercial relationships in them at all.
Publisher's note — edit before launch. Name the specific programmes you join here (Amazon Associates and similar). Amazon's operating agreement requires particular wording, currently along the lines of "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases", displayed where the links appear. US publishers are covered by the FTC's endorsement guides, which want the disclosure clear and close to the link, not only on this page — which is why the issue template repeats it inline. Confirm current requirements with each programme; this is a draft, not legal advice.
If a pick goes bad
Recommendations get revisited. When a product changes, gets discontinued, or turns out to have a fault we missed, the issue is updated with the date and the reason, and the old pick stays visible rather than being quietly deleted.
